Διαβάζοντας το ελληνικό καλοκαίρι…

 Από τη Χώρα της Πάτμου μέχρι το φαράγγι του Βίκου και από τα Κύθηρα ως τη Χίο, η Ελλάδα είναι υπέροχη όπου και αν σταθείς και το κάθε μέρος έχει την ιδιαίτερη ομορφιά του.  Όμως είναι όλα τα βιβλία κατάλληλα για όλους τους προορισμούς;  Ή μήπως πρέπει να βρούμε το βιβλίο που θα αναδείξει την ατμόσφαιρα και την χαρακτηριστική γοητεία του κάθε μέρους 🙂

September was black and white

Θα ξεκινήσω ανάποδα: 30 Σεπτεμβρίου ήταν η Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Μετάφρασης, ημέρα της γιορτής του Αγ. Ιερωνύμου, μεταφραστή της Βίβλου στα Λατινικά. Αυτή την ημέρα έχει καθιερωθεί να γιορτάζεται η τέχνη των μοναχικών, των αθεράπευτα ρομαντικών, των εραστών των βιβλίων και των (άπιαστων) λέξεων: των μεταφραστών 🙂

Λίγες ημέρες νωρίτερα είχε καταφτάσει με το ταχυδρομείο το πιο τέλειο πακετάκι! Περιείχε το υπέροχο και κλασικό πλέον Secret Garden  σε συλλεκτική έκδοση με «κεντημένο» εξώφυλλο! Το πιο υπέροχο δώρο για ένα βιβλιοφάγο!!!

Book of the weekend – The Secret Garden

the healing power of living things

A spoiled little English girl living in India loses both her parents in a cholera epidemic and is send to England, to stay with an uncle she has never met before and whom everyone describes as «peculiar», «sour», «distant».

She starts to explore the house and its vast gardens and is fascinated by a story about a Secret Garden where no-one has ever set foot in years. The garden was sealed after her uncle’s wife, who adored the garden and tended to it herself, died living him alone in the world? Or not exactly alone, as Mary is soon to find out…

Simplistic and explicitly didactic at times, the book however never fails to create a wonderful atmosphere of absolute bliss, the simple joy of being outdoors, playing with the world and letting nature work its «magic» on all beings.

The book has often been adapted to film and TV series and has inspired many works of literature and theater, even though it  was neglected for many years by critics.

It has also been published with a beautiful embroidered cover! I wish I could find it somewhere!

 

a book of pure heartbreak!

Ok I won’t share any spoilers but I really have to say that! This is a book of heartbreak and war and the tagline «Prepare to be hooked» couldn’t be more literal and accurate!!! It is a wretched painache, a constant battle of will (and power), a whirlwind of action, love, hate and passion. It has everything anyone has ever loved in the Mortal Instruments series multiplied by 100!

Cassandra knows how to please her readers and is really torturing them with conflicting emotions from page one. I am only sharing a couple of snippets I liked so far to make you visualise what I’m talking about! I really can’t wait till the book comes out in Greece this autumn!!!

 

His smile was wistful. «Have you ever felt that your heart contained so much that it must surely break apart?»

Jace thought of Alec wounded in his lap, of Max still and white on the floor of the Accords Hall; he thought of Valentine, his arms around Jace as Jace’s blood soaked the sand underneath them. And lastly he thought of Clary: her sharp bravery that kept him safe, her sharper wit that kept him sane, the steadiness of her love.

 

Train roll on, on down the line

Last night just finished Tuesday’s Gone by Nicci French author duet (they are husband and wife). I don’t have much time for a full review right now (supposed to be working, ain’t I?) but I will give you the synopsis and some cover variations. It was not a bad mystery, and the pace was good, although somewhat slow but what I didn’t like was that the bad guys in their novels (same with Blue Monday) get under your skin and there is no katharsis. Evil is not suppressed in the end of the book and even though I’m not all for black and white solutions, I really felt disturbed by how they imply that so much evil is still lurking somewhere in the shadows. Maybe it is, though, and they are just being realistic.

Also the title reminded me of this song by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The rotting, naked corpse of a man is found amidst swarms of flies in the living room of a confused woman. Who is he? Why is Michelle Doyce trying to serve him afternoon tea? And how did the dead body find its way into her flat?

DCI Karlsson needs an expert to delve inside Michelle’s mind for answers and turns to former colleague, psychiatrist Frieda Klein. Eventually Michelle’s ramblings lead to a vital clue that in turn leads to a possible identity. Robert Poole. Jack of all trades and master conman.

The deeper Frieda and Karlsson dig, the more of Poole’s victims they encounter . . . and the more motives they uncover for his murder. But is anyone telling them the truth except for poor, confused Michelle?

And when the past returns to haunt Frieda, she finds herself in danger. Whoever set out to destroy Poole also seems determined to destroy Frieda Klein

Το βιβλίο κυκλοφορεί από 30/7 με κινηματογραφικό εξώφυλλο (tie-in edition):

Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι είμαι team Jamie (Bower) για τον Τζέις αλλά όλοι λένε ότι «he grows on you». Ίσως να με πείσει στην ταινία! Πάντως είναι ένα απο τα πολύ ωραία βιβλία του είδους του, γεμάτο ζωηρές εικόνες από το αγαπημένο της Μανχάταν , φαντασία, λογοτεχνία, μαγεία, προδοσία, έντονα συναισθήματα και πάθος, χιούμορ και φυσικά δράση!

Απ’ την άλλη, βρίσκω τη Λίλι Κόλινς πολύ γλυκιά σαν Κλέρι -και όσο εκνευριστική γίνεται και η Κλέρι ώρες ώρες στο βιβλίο!

Η Κλερ έχει καταφέρει να δημιουργήσει μερικούς από τους πιο quirky χαρακτήρες της σύγχρονης λογοτεχνίας του φανταστικού, ήρωες για τους οποίους νοιάζεσαι, συμπαθείς ή αντιπαθείς και σίγουρα θέλεις να παρακολουθήσεις και σε άλλες περιπέτειες. Ευτυχώς η σειρά έχει άλλα 5 βιβλία και μία πρίκουελ σειρά, τις Δαιμονικές Μηχανές αλλά και τα Σκοτεινά Αντικείμενα με κυνηγούς δαιμόνων και τα Bane Chronicles που παρακολουθούν τις περιπέτειες ενός από τους πιο ενδιαφέροντες χαρακτήρες των βιβλίων: του Μέγα Μάγου του Μπρούκλιν, Μάγκνους Μπέιν.

Τα βιβλία της Κλερ έχουν πουλήσει εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα παγκοσμίως και είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι ενώ και η ίδια ξεκίνησε να γράφει fan fiction για τα Lord of the Rings και Harry Potter, πλέον οι φανατικοί αναγνώστες της έχουν αρχίσει να γράφουν fan fiction για τις δικές της σειρές!

Η σειρά όπως και όλα τα βιβλία της Κλερ κυκλοφορούν στα ελληνικά από τις εκδόσεις Πλατύπους.

Από την καρέκλα του γραφείου στην ξαπλώστρα, με μικρά διαλείμματα για βουτιές, έχω μια λίστα βιβλίων που «κρατάω» για να διαβάσω το καλοκαίρι που (λέμε τώρα) θα έχω περισσότερο χρόνο…

1. Mo Yan, Οι μπαλάντες του σκόρδου, εκδόσεις Καστανιώτη.

έχει κατηγορηθεί τόσο ως συντηρητικός επειδή συμμετείχε σε μια έκδοση προς τιμήν του Μάο Τσε Τουνγκ, όσο και ως αντιρρησίας, καθώς τα βιβλία του απαγορεύθηκαν από τη λογοκρισία. Α, πήρε και το Νομπέλ Λογοτεχνίας 2012.

2. Haruki Murakami, 1Q84, Vintage International, έκδοση που περιέχει και τα 4 βιβλία.

κάπου διάβασα πως πρέπει να έχεις IQ 1984 για να το διαβάσεις και αυτό από μόνο του είναι μία πρόκληση!

3. Κάρλος Λουίζ Θαφόν, Το παιχνίδι του αγγέλου, Η σκιά του Ανέμου, Ο αιχμάλωτος του ουρανού, τα έχω κατεβάσει αλλά μάλλον από εκδόσεις Ψυχογιός θα το πάρω.

γιατί υπόσχεται να είναι χορταστικό και με προκαλεί να χαθώ στον κόσμο του.

4. Τζέφρι Ευγενίδης, Σενάριο Γάμου, αγγλική έκδοση ένα paperback από Forth Estate.

γιατί έχει μείνει πολύ καιρό αδιάβαστο στη βιβλιοθήκη μου

5. Τζόναθαν Φράνζεν, Οι διορθώσεις, επίσης σε paperback από Forth Estate.

γιατί πρέπει μετά να διαβάσω και την Ελευθερία

ΤΙ ΔΕΝ ΘΑ ΔΙΑΒΑΣΩ:

το δίτομο Wolf Hall της δις βραβευμένης με Μπούκερ Χίλαρι Μάντελ γιατί το ξεκίνησα και το σκυλοβαρέθηκα και δεν μπορώ να πω ότι αντιλήφθηκα την «έξοχη πρόζα» για την οποία την εξυμνούν και γιατί λένε ότι είναι ίσως η καλύτερη βρετανιδα συγγραφέας αυτή τη στιγμή. Ίσως δεν ήμουν σε φάση για βρετανική ιστορία εκείνη την περίοδο και γι ‘αυτό το λόγο σκέφτομαι να δώσω μια ευκαιρία στο Πέρα από το Μαύρο που είχε κυκλοφορήσει παλιότερα από τον Πάπυρο.
